Something Fishy going on here!

The Something Fishy project is an annual collaboration between Education Centres nationally and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The Something Fishy project is an annual collaboration between Education Centres nationally and Inland Fisheries Ireland. Using the website www.somethingfishy.ie children work on the themes of fish, fishing and water as a habitat. It is an ideal way to teach the science curriculum in an active way. A highpoint is the fieldtrip led by fisheries officers.

Blackrock Education Centre created the website www.somethingfishy.ie for Inland Fisheries Ireland to promote the work of IFI through teaching practical science. Each year 10 Education Centres and dozens of schools nationally take part in this very exciting project. They work their way through the lessons on the website in which they learn all about the life of the salmon. They are introduced to a wide range of topical themes including water as a habitat, the importance of recreational angling, the interdependence of all aspects of the natural environment, fish as part of a healthy diet. Each participating school also has an opportunity to visit the river and see the work of the fisheries officers. The photographs show some of these activities: electrofishing, examining water creatures, investigating pollution, holding a trout, how to cast a line. The excitement is palpable.
In Blackrock Education Centre, Nell Regan coordinates the project, visiting the schools and liaising with the Eastern Fisheries officers. Each year there is a national competition in which the participating schools submit a project. This  year the theme for the project is angling with rod and line. Awards date is 17th June.
