A MaKey MaKey is an Arduino board that can turn everyday objects into a touch-pad or computer key. Not only can you make a connection through conductive material but you can also make and/or create inventions that combine conductive and non-conductive parts. MaKey MaKey is a simple kit suitable for beginners and experts which can be used in a range of class groups to generate questions and encourage cooperative learning. A short 3-session course introducing Arduino, Robotics and Sensors, and some simple programming concepts, as used in CoderDojo Bray to introduce these topics to kids from 7-17. No prior experience is necessary and over the course of 3 2-hour sessions you will be introduced to how to write simple programs to control lights, read sensors, and control a simple wheeled robot. This shows the crossover between computer software and the physical world, and will allow you to bring this back to your classrooms and introduce the same concepts to your students. Some familiarity with writing simple computer code in any language would be an advantage but by no means necessary.

A collaborative event between Blackrock Education Centre and Sustainable Energy Ireland, typical annual savings of participant schools have been in the order of 10% - 20%. Aimed towards principals or other members of management, involves two half-day workshops where schools are given access to a range of resources and expert advice. The Active School Flag (ASF) programme is a DES initiative which recognises schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The presentation will advise schools about the ASF application process and provide lots of practical advice about how schools can become more physically active places. Information about support that is available to schools from national organisations will also be provided. The initiative is open to primary, post primary, special schools and Youthreach Centres to apply.
