Blackrock Education Centre is happy to partner with Discover Primary Science and Maths and European Space Education Resource Office Ireland to offer three x 2 hour workshops. Using hands-on activities, they will demonstrate how a framework of inquiry based science teaching and learning might be used to teach a scientific activity (i.e. one lesson) and a scientific theme or topic (i.e. over many lessons). Teachers will also be introduced to the many science teaching resources. Session 1: Monday March 23rd; Session 2: Monday April 27th and Session 3: Monday May 25th

This 2 hour workshop will situate the teaching of comprehension strategies within the broader context of reading development. It will explore the comprehension strategies and examine an instructional framework through which they can be taught. The workshop will be followed up with an optional clinic, which will give teachers an opportunity to explore comprehension in relation to their own school context.

Most Post-Primary pupils use technology for games and communication but it cannot be guaranteed that they know how to find and evaluate the suitability of information. They are inextricably linked to the comprehension strategies of skimming, scanning, determining importance and summarising. These are skills worth developing with an array of ICT tools and applications to assist us. We have moved from an era of limited information sources to an era where we have almost unlimited sources of information. This workshop focusses on search skills - looking for information safely in one safe source; using a variety of search functions to get to the information required; introducing a number of student safe search engines; collating information found for later use; attributing the source of informa

This workshop will be run over two sessions and is suitable for teachers of junior and senior infant classes. It may also be suitable for learning support teachers. The workshop will support teachers in the exploration of: • The development and acquisition of mathematical skills in the Number strand • Mathematical language as central to instruction • Use of appropriate mathematical equipment for infants • Problem-Solving as a central methodology • Self-reflection on existing practice.

This is an Experiential and Practical Workshop which aims to provide participants with awareness into the world of Creative Arts as a therapeutic tool for working with both children and adolescents. The workshop will give the participants techniques to work with children and adolescents in a manner which will help develop a therapeutic relationship. The workshop will be very beneficial for those working with clients who have difficulty in expressing their thoughts or feelings. The workshop will include: • Importance of establishing and creating a therapeutic relationship. • Experiential exercises of using creative and practical exercises to engage adolescent in therapeutic relationship. • Adolescent Development and awareness of this in working with adolescents.

NQTs will be given an opportunity to reflect on their own individual values, behaviours and attitudes which will determine inclusive practice in their classrooms. Emphasis will be placed on how to develop strategies to ensure that pupils/students with special educational needs are included.

This course is ideal for those looking to use free online resources to assess their students in innovative and creative ways. If you feel jaded by handwritten records and Friday tests, it's time to make a change and start using tools that do all that work for you. Each week we will look at various assessment methods that will be explored using modern, online tools. We will offer a hands-on exploration of Padlet, Socrative, Get Kahoot, Cube Creator, EdPuzzle, EdModo and Blendspace, to name but a few. While these tools may mean nothing to you now, they can afford you an amazing opportunity to assess your students in a new, exciting way.

This seminar entitled; Learning Support: Literacy and Team Teaching will explore team teaching through the lens of providing in-class support in Literacy to children with learning difficulties. Key components of the seminar content will include models of team teaching and planning for this methodology. This seminar will be delivered by PDST Local Facilitators who are practicing learning support teachers with expertise in this area.

The purpose of these two 2-hour workshops is to introduce participants to a research-based approach to the teaching and learning of spelling. The objectives of the workshops include: • To provide an overview of English spelling and the reasons for its perceived complexities. • To inform teachers about current research findings on how children learn to spell. • To introduce teachers to the concept of Word Study and how it might be applied to the teaching and learning of spelling. • To provide practical opportunities for teachers to engage in Word Study activities. • To discuss possibilities for diagnostic assessment.

It will include a workshop based around genre-based writing, cultivating positive attitudes and motivation towards writing, within the context of a writing workshop approach. Teachers will be provided with an opportunity to explore how a writing workshop approach works in a primary school classroom. This course will also provide practical ideas for teacher, peer and self-assessment of children’s writing.
