The PDST ‘Wellread National Award’ is a national initiative designed and organised by the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). It aims to create HEIGHTENED AWARENESS about the importance of creating a CULTURE OF READING in school communities for our young people as part of their personal and academic development. The PDST ‘Wellread National Award’ is an initiative that seeks to involve all relevant stakeholders who impact on student learning including STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ANCILLARY STAFF, PARENTS, BOARD OF MANAGEMENT AND WIDER COMMUNITY in a range of reading and associated activities.

PDST will be delivering the first of two seminars in local education centers throughout the country, the first being delivered in January 2016. The second seminar will be delivered in March 2016. This seminar will be 2 ½ hours in duration and Art teachers will be invited to attend either a morning seminar (9.30 am – 12.00) or an afternoon seminar (1.30- 4:00pm). Please book for your preferred date and time. Light lunch provided. The seminar will explore the change to the assessment process for Leaving Certificate Art, as communicated to your school by the Department of Education and Skills (See circular letter 0035/2015). This project is built around a 3-4 week visit to a classroom (5th Class) of a fully equipped and stocked aquarium of sea creatures from the Irish Sea. The aim is to integrate the aquarium visit with the class curriculum, particularly in SESE, Literacy and Numeracy.

Key elements of the workshop include a discussion on the concept of differentiation, the role of the teacher and the practical implementation of a number of differentiation strategies. Scenario-based discussion and teacher reflection are an integral part of this workshop.

Many Irish schools have chosen Problem-Solving as their next area of focus in School Self-evaluation of numeracy. However, many teachers find teaching problem-solving difficult, especially in a way that deepens their pupils’ mathematical thinking. Our challenge is to ensure that even in a busy classroom that math is: • set in meaningful contexts, • enjoyable and engaging, • differentiated suitably to ensure success while still being challenging, • supporting the development of higher order thinking and skills, • and more enjoyable to teach!

These workshops on shape and space will support you in developing a problem-solving approach to shape and space with your pupils. You will see how establishing a learning environment based firstly around concrete experiences, underpins your pupils’ conceptual understanding of shape and space. You will also explore how to use a range of practical assessment strategies to determine your pupils’ progression in understanding shape and space concepts. Professional Credit Award (Leading Learning) The Professional Credit Award (Leading Learning) at NUI Galway is designed to accredit learning across a range of teacher Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules. These modules (10ECTS/credits) may be school-based CPD, short courses in Education Centres linked to classroom practice, or equivalent, across the curriculum. This course provides an introduction to LearnStorm Ireland (formerly known as MATHletes), a free All-Ireland maths challenge designed to build confidence and competence. Last year, 13,000 primary and secondary students took part in the challenge and spent over 3 million minutes learning maths on Khan Academy. From 29 January to 1 April 2016, students from 4th class to 5th year can master maths skills to earn rewards and recognition for themselves and their school. LearnStorm is easy for schools and teachers to deploy and gives every student a way to succeed, no matter their level.
