'The poetry of Tracy K. Smith for Leaving Cert English'
This webinar is aimed at teachers of Senior Cycle English. Tracy K. Smith is a new poet included in
the Prescribed Material for the Leaving Certificate Examination 2025.
Smith was born in Massachusetts and raised in northern California. She is a professor of English
and of African and African American Studies. Smith is a Pulitzer winning poet, and a two-time poet
laureate of the United States (2017-2019). She uses her poetry to capture what it means to be a
descendent of slaves, a human in love, a nation divided. In her work she raises questions on
identity, relationships, sexuality and power.
The webinar will focus on: Biography of the poet.
Discussion of the key themes across her work. Stylistic features in her poetry.
Essay style questions.
Ann Marie Garvey has over twenty years teaching experience and works in Coláiste Cholmcille,
Ballyshannon. She was seconded for three years as an English Advisor with Junior Cycle for
Teachers. She has been an Advising Examiner of Leaving Cert Higher Level English for the past eight
years and remains an English Associate with Oide.
Elaine McGowan has over twenty years teaching experience and is currently a teacher of English and
History and Year Head in St. Attracta's Community School, Co. Sligo. She was an Examiner for both
Junior and Leaving Cert. Higher Level English. Elaine returned to her classroom after a four year
secondment to Junior Cycle for Teachers as an English Advisor.
