Emotion Coaching is a relational, skills-based approach for adults to use during moments of heightened emotion and resulting behaviour to guide and teach children and young people about more effective responses. It is about helping children to become more aware of their emotions they experience “in the moment”, why they arise and how to manage them.
Emotion Coaching was originally a parenting strategy observed by US psychologist Dr John Gottman (1997). He identified that children who were parented through this strategy were able to control their impulses and delay gratification, self soothe when upset, have better attentional capacity and increased motivation, performed better academically and were better able to function in social relationships.
Dr Janet Rose and her colleague, Dr. Louise Gilbert, identified that supporting the development of such traits would be a useful addition to the school environment. They took Gottman’s five steps of Emotion Coaching and developed a school-friendly programme that uses four core steps to help engender emotional resilience, empathy and problem solving skills within children and young people.
This five-part course is suitable for Primary, Secondary School Teachers and SNA's this will cover the following key topics:
• Background to Emotion Coaching
• Recent neuro-scientific evidence on how to support children's self-regulation
• Insights into the stress-response system and foundations for positive behaviour and well-being
• Importance of attunement and meta-emotion awareness
• Practical exercises and skill development in Emotion Coaching*
The course is delivered by Lucy Mannion, who has worked in special education and mental health for more than a decade and completed training through Emotion Coaching UK. Lucy has many years’ experience using emotion coaching in schools with children who have difficulties regulating their emotions due to ADHD, Autism or adverse childhood experiences/trauma.
*The course is designed to be interactive and it is therefore expected that participants will have their cameras and microphones switched on for parts of each workshop, in order to engage in practical exercises that support development of skills in emotion coaching. It is important that these skills are practised in advance of applying them in a school setting.
Workshops take place on 27th September,4th, 11th, 18th & 25th October 2022
