20LC 05 013 - Trauma informed schools : understanding and working with the effects of trauma on learning and behaviour : how do we move from survival to thriving?

Across the world teachers, families and students have been adjusting to a ‘new normal’, where learning is done at home but competes with a myriad of other priorities, tasks and feelings, where teachers are living through the trauma with their students. As we start to look at a new school year, amidst the uncertainty, fear and anxiety that might bring, it will be important to be able to draw on our own experience of this traumatic time as well as our understanding of attachment and trauma to resource ourselves and to support our students.

This training consists of 2 parts.

In part 1 participants will come together to reflect on what has been happening for them since schools closed, what they have learned and what they need going forward to be resourceful mentally and emotionally in order to best support students.

Topics covered will include :

· Definition of trauma and its impact on the brain and behaviour

· Recognising and developing coping strategies to build resilience and regulation

· Identifying and working with strengths

· Ways to create safety, maintain connection and relationships

In part 2 participants will focus on their work with students, the new school year and developing trauma-informed practice.

Topics covered will include :

· Recognising indicators of trauma in class

· Applying the principles of trauma informed practice and attachment theory in school

· Dealing with transitions – particularly for more vulnerable students

· The impact of trauma on thinking and learning

· Educational tasks and activities which create emotional safety

· Recognising defence mechanisms – breaking negative interaction patterns
