Aims of the workshop: • To consider what constitutes a critical incident in various school settings. • To outline four steps in developing a critical incident response plan • To consider appropriate responses in sample cases which have occurred in Irish schools and to share learnings and good practice from experiences of previous incidents. Participants will have the opportunity to: • To identify protective structures and practices in schools • To share ideas on the promotion of a caring ethos of physical and psychological safety in a school which can lessen the impact of a critical incident, should it arise • Review a NEPS template to generate a critical incident management policy appropriate to the needs of a post-primary school community.

Teacher Professionalism and Well-Being (Cross-Sectoral) NIPTWS01: This workshop is designed to provide NQTs with an opportunity to explore and reflect on some of the professional issues that may arise for NQTs as they begin their teaching career. Key aspects include the Teaching Council Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers, working with other adults in a professional setting, caring for the voice, getting started with planning and maintaining a work/life balance.

Based on the principles of a Nurture Group, (an intervention for the social, emotional and mental wellbeing of children within U.K. primary schools) this course will provide teachers with the information, case studies, skills and strategies needed to create nurture among the busy school community. Teachers will be trained in using Boxall Profile Assessments, talked through a typical day in a Nurture Group, given strategies of how to spot a child in need of nurture and create strategies to implement positive change in their school communities. "If children cannot learn the way we teach, we need to teach them the way they learn"  This course takes place on Thursday 27th September 5.00pm - 8.00pm and and 4th, 11th & 25th October 2018

With film being used regularly in English (now at Junior Cycle level as well as in Leaving Cert) and in Religious Education, this hands-on IT course will give participants skills to work more effectively with film. There will be guidance on sourcing films, sourcing and creating film clips (e.g. to illustrate key moments), creating stills from films (again to illustrate key moments or capture concepts) and designing effective notes, worksheets, and handouts.

School Self-Evaluation and Planning NIPTWS02: This workshop is
designed to assist NQTs to plan in a focused, effective and efficient
manner. School Self-Evaluation and Junior Cycle are referenced and
discussed as well as the implications for the planning process are
explored. Requirements regarding planning, preparation and
recording of progress are presented. This workshop provides
examples of planning templates that can be used to support NQTs’
work over the year. Opportunities to discuss and share strategies and
ideas will be a central element of this workshop.
