Review: John Kelly, “Joyce the Student, University College, Dublin, 1898-1902”

JoyceTheStudentI am thoroughly enjoying and learning from your well researched and very organized course.

As I mentioned before, I am reading an enjoyable book which may also be of interest to your students.

John Kelly, “Joyce the Student, University College, Dublin, 1898-1902” (Published by Gleoiteog Press, an imprint of Feeinish Productions Ltd., Dublin, Ireland 2021)

This is available on Amazon and I expect is also available at Dublin book sellers.

The book covers important formative years for Joyce from the age of 16 to 20, during which he developed his views on the Catholic Church, Irish Nationalism, literature, music, sex and many other topics. We learn about the development of University College Dublin (UCD), relationships with Trinity College Dublin (TCD), and meet various characters who inspire  later appearances in Joyce's books.

(John Kelly was my Chemical Engineering Professor and Registrar at UCD who developed an interest in Jimmy J later in life. The book brings back happy memories of UCD Newman House, Saint Stephen’s Green and Earlsforth Terrace…and the blessed trinity of pubs at the top of Lesson Street after Literary and Historical (L&H) Society meetings on Saturday evenings.)
